Herne Bay, Auckland

Now in Auckland, crashing on a friend's floor in town while I get car details worked out. Net access will be sporadic for the foreseeable future, so expect large email delays.

Trying to sleep on a plane with a recently broken neck is no fun. Especially in seat B. Just in case you were wondering.

The six weeks I spent shifting left handed in college seem to have stuck with me, as I was able to drive my first manual lefty just fine. The car I've ended up with for the longer term is an automatic though, which will be better for any out-of-town friends.

Airport security has renewed their special interest in me, but I won't bore you with the details. Not sure if it's the long-again hair, the post-flight migraine, or the dozens of little holes my pants acquired while I was welding rebar for Burningman.

Darpa has quietly replaced the words "Two Million Dollars" with the word "Trophies" in their description of the current grand challenge. This may put a damper on my participation. Meanwhile, they've funded ahead of time twelve mostly-large companies to the tune of a million each. I guess getting far better results at a fraction the cost just wasn't working for them so they had to return to the traditional Cheney funding model.

In other random news, turns out my host here is also a rare INTP 7 (enneagram 7) like myself and a few of my closest friends. For a statistically non-existent type combination, I'm amassing quite a collection of them. Of course they're a highly migratory lot, so I'll never likely see many of them in one spot at the same time. Perhaps when I kick off my cybernetics institute in Maui I'll be able to lure them all together for a bit. :)
